The LTQ Orbitrap XL is based at lower campus and is used for non-biological samples. Orbitrap mass analysers are recognised for their ability to produce ultra-high mass accuracy and resolution measurements; these performance capabilities allow mass spectrometry results to be interpreted with a significant degree of confidence.
The Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap XL is a hybrid FTMS (Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometer) that incorporates the sensitive LTQ linear ion trap and Orbitrap mass analysers. The instrument is equipped with electrospray ionisation (ESI), atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI), static nanospray (nano-ESI), and DESI (Desorption –ESI) ionisation sources.
The instrument is used for wide variety of experiments, including accurate mass determinations; analyte molecule structural characterisation, Native mass spectrometry and is connected to an Accela liquid chromatography (LC) system, for LC-MS and LC-MS/MS experiments to characterise and quantify small molecules in complex mixtures.
