MWAC X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy - 5 Day Course (28 Oct - 1 Nov, 2019)

Description

The Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) has invited internationally renowned expert on surface analysis, Dr John Grant, to run a 5-day course on surface analysis using XPS. This course will be relevant to researchers involved in semiconductor characterisation, functional surface preparation, 2D materials, polymer science, chemistry of solid materials. The course ticket is available at a heavy discounted rate of $110 ONLY.

Course Overview

This course is taught in a hands-on environment, so attendees can learn how to use the many features of this powerful software program. XPS is used to determine the atoms present at a surface and their concentrations, chemistry, and lateral and depth distributions.

This course will cover topics including:

  • Introduction to surface analysis

  • Principles and instrumentation used for XPS

  • Qualitative analysis for element identification

  • Quantifying elements on your surface

  • Recognising artefacts from X-ray damage and charging

  • Depth profiling and angle-resolved XPS

  • Other experiments:

          * Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS)

          * Ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS)

          * Reflected energy loss spectroscopy (REELS)

  • Hands-on software training to process your own XPS data in CasaXPS (one of the top packages in the field, freely available under a UNSW site licence)

The course will include an overview of the features in CasaXPS, converting data from the ESCALAB Xi+ into the ISO standard format, different display modes, different peak identification and labelling methods, different background subtraction methods (linear, Shirley, Tougaard,…), peak areas, sensitivity factors and their linked databases, quantitative analysis using default transitions and user-selected transitions, quantitative analysis when peaks from different elements overlap, adding and subtracting spectra, curve fitting, selection of lineshapes and backgrounds, curve fitting using reference spectra, combining curve fit data into quantitative analysis tables, correcting the energy scale for sample charging, propagating processed data to other data, depth profile data, least squares fitting, annotation relative to peaks or to the display box, spectrum zoom, inserting additional spectra within a window, copying spectra into reports, changing aspect ratios, changing fonts, changing line colours, customising CasaXPS, and creating and saving versions with different options.
