To get started:
Step 1 - Meet BMSF Staff
Have you already spoken to a BMSF staff member about your project or analytical enquiry?
If not, please contact BMSF at bmsf@unsw.edu.au or a BMSF staff member directly. You will need to provide a short description of what you want to achieve with your project.
Arrange a meeting to discuss your analytical needs with a BMSF staff member
This will inform us about:
- Whether your analytical needs can be met with our current mass spectrometry methods and instrumentation
- Whether new method development is required
- Any relevant costs, charges and training, if applicable
- Which BMSF labs you require induction to
Please note: Meetings with BMSF staff can be conducted virtually or in person.
Step 2 - User Registration
Register online to the BMSF ACLS system by following this link, then:
-
Click on "New User - please apply HERE"
-
Choose “Bioanalytical Mass Spectrometry Facility”
-
Fill out your details.
If you have already previously registered to ACLS and can see the BMSF node when you log on, you do not need to re-register.
Step 3 – Project Registration
Download and complete the BMSF Project Registration Form (PRF).
Your supervisor should email the approved form to Cigdem Guzel (c.guzel@unsw.edu.au) and Sydney Liu Lau, Laboratory Coordinator (s.liulau@unsw.edu.au).
Should you have questions about completing this form, please contact the Laboratory Coordinator.
NOTE: Make sure you have Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat installed.
Step 4 - Health and Safety Questionnaire
You must complete the relevant laboratory's questionnaire after reading the BMSF Lab Manual.
The questionnaires can be accessed by clicking on the links for each lab (you will be directed to a new page):
- Wallace Wurth (C27) Questionnaire
- Biosciences Precinct (E26) Questionnaire
- June Griffith (F10) (formerly Chemical Sciences) Questionnaire
Step 5 - Register for an Induction Tour
You MUST obtain 100% correct answers on the questionnaire before booking an induction tour.
You will be emailed a link once you have obtained 100% correct answers. You may need to check your Spam folder.
The induction tours are the last step of the induction process.
AFTER TRAINING - Declare Safety Documents as Read on ACLS
This is done after you have completed instrument training with BMSF staff.
- Click on https://acls.analytical.unsw.edu.au/
- Sign in with your credentials:
- UNSW researchers use the “UNSW Sign In” link and enter your zID@ad.unsw.edu.au
- External users use the “External User Sign In” link and enter your login name and password (if unsure, contact c.guzel@unsw.edu.au or s.liulau@unsw.edu.au)
- Once in, look for “WHS Documents” in the top bar of the page
- Select the BMSF Document access page
- Select the instrument based on the building you were trained on (eg., for the LTQ-FT you select Wallace Wurth (C27) à LTQ-FT)
- Select the appropriate document file. It will appear on the right-hand side of the page. If the screen is too small to read, you may also download the file.
- Once reading is complete, tick the declaration statement at the bottom of the form.
- Do this for BOTH SWP and RMF documents.
- Notify Cigdem (c.guzel@unsw.edu.au) and Sydney (s.liulau@unsw.edu.au) that the documents have been read
- NOTE: Ensure this is done so there are no delays in issuing a training certificate for the instrument
- Once the training certificate has been issued, you will be notified and you will be able to book the instrument the next time you log on ACLS.
